Cigna is continuing to shrink its real estate footprint. The latest move involves shedding more than half of its office space in a Center City Philadelphia tower.
The Bloomfield, Connecticut-based insurer downsized its space at Two Liberty Place. Cigna now occupies less than 165,250 square feet following a recent lease renewal.
The reduction removes nearly 141,000 square feet from the company’s previous footprint in the 37-story building. The move reflects broader changes to Cigna’s national real estate strategy.
Cigna has been adjusting its office portfolio across the United States. These changes stem from evolving workplace needs following the pandemic.
The company previously downsized a 185,000-square-foot office in Visalia, California, which later closed in 2022. It also vacated its 682,000-square-foot former global headquarters in Bloomfield, Connecticut.
Additional adjustments have been made to its remaining Connecticut operations in recent years. Together, the moves signal a long-term shift toward a leaner office strategy.
Cigna was formed in 1982 through the merger of Philadelphia’s Insurance Company of North America and Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. Despite its local roots, its physical footprint continues to contract.
Between 2023 and 2025, the company cut thousands of corporate jobs. The workforce reductions align with a broader push toward remote and hybrid work.
For Center City, the downsizing adds to available large-block office space. It also underscores continued pressure on legacy office users to reassess long-term space needs.
